The Manus was carried by an individual legionary and auxiliary Century unit of the Legion. It was usually carried at the head of the legion while on the march by the Signifer.
Each Manus was unique to its Century and was composed of a lot of disks along with many other items mounted of a poll mounted with a manus (hand) image.
One to six disks were displayed on a signum and the number of disks is thought to represent the number of the Century unit.
